Feet are Extraordinary!!

Feet come in all forms, shapes and sizes, ranging from high arches to no arches; bony protrusions; overlapping toes, fat toes, scrawny toes; dry, scaly skin to soft and supple skin - not to mention that feet can have their own individual aroma!

However, whether you love your feet or not, they are an amazing piece of machinery to have as the extremities of your body. Your feet will enable you to run, move, walk, swim; assist you in standing, balancing and supporting. They will absorb shock whenever you jump and land on them, supporting your whole body weight. It is said that every person in their lifetime (average age of 80) walks the equivalent distance of FIVE times around the earth! How incredible is that?!

Therefore, it is vitally important to take great care of your feet and to reward them for the hard work and demands you place on them, daily. Your feet are the furthest extremities from your body and are highly sensitive, with many pressures / reflex points and over 7,000 nerve endings in each foot. Not to forget that the feet are made up of a selection and variety of bones, tendons, ligaments and muscle tissue. The whole structure of the feet plays a huge part in the mechanism of our body; it comes as no surprise that the combinations of structure and nerve endings means we are able to feel every pleasant sensation, as well as pain and discomfort from our feet. Whatever we feel, these sensations will travel upwards from our feet and through many parts of our body.

In order to make sure you take great care of your feet, it’s important to consider three key areas related to receiving proper maintenance and treatment. So many of my clients at Jeannies Elm Sanctuary are confused about Reflexology because they think that if there are structural problems with their feet, Reflexology will be able to fix it, which is not entirely true. There are other professional bodies that practice care and wellbeing for your feet.

1. Foot Practitioner/ Chiropodist/Podiatrists
Podiatrists are health care professionals who have been trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs. They also prevent deformity, keep people mobile and active, as well as relieve pain and treat infections.

2. Massage is not necessarily focused on the same areas as reflexologists focus on, but massage is a treatment that is just as comforting and nurturing. The aim of massage is to ease, smooth and melt away tensions and pain that are held in the feet. Skillful massage movements aid to relax and soften the muscles and joints, designed to bring comfort to tired feet.

3. Reflexology is a treatment that uses firm thumb, finger and knuckle movements to stimulate the reflex / pressure points in the feet. These pressure points are reputed to connect directly with the nervous system and affect the bodily organs and glands. Reflexology may help to lessen any pain; it also helps you to achieve a sense of complete well-being. The therapy aids and assists to kick starting your body into self healing.

I am a fully accredited Reflexologist with ten years of experience. I hold a full membership of the Association of Reflexologists.
